Summertime is in full swing in Europe, and that means one thing: the 2026 Wimbledon Championships are upon us. The intrigue at the most prestigious event in tennis could not be higher on the men’s side as Novak Djokovic hunts for Grand Slam No. 25. As always, we at LWOT offer our roundtable analysis and predictions on each match. Let’s dive in.
Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions
Learner Tien vs Dalibor Svrcina
Ilemona
Both players have enjoyed strong seasons, but Tien has continued to show why he is regarded as one of the brightest young talents on tour. His clean ball-striking and improved movement on faster courts should allow him to dictate enough of the baseline exchanges against Svrcina.
Prediction: Tien in 3
Zain
Dalibor Svrcina’s attacking approach can prove effective on grass, but this is a player who plays most of his tennis on the Challenger Tour. Against a tactically sound player like Learner Tien, Svrcina will need to take the racket out of the American’s hands. But that is not something that can be done easily, and Tien’s advantage from the back of the court should be enough for him to advance.
Prediction: Tien in 4
Tope
Learner Tien’s first-round draw has handed him Dalibor Svrcina, a Czech journeyman whose season has been confined largely to the Challenger clay circuit and the grass at SW19 is unlikely to flatter a player without the weapons to consistently hurt an opponent of Tien’s calibre. The American’s reading of the court and his return game should create openings early and often, leaving Svrcina with little margin to work with. Tien advances.
Prediction: Tien in 3
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Juan Manuel Cerundolo
Ilemona
Davidovich Fokina has carried solid form into the grass season, using his athleticism and variety to good effect on the surface. Cerundolo is more comfortable on clay, and while he can extend rallies, Davidovich Fokina’s greater experience on grass should help him stay on the front foot throughout the match.
Prediction: Davidovich Fokina in 3
Zain
Having just recently won his first ATP Tour title, that too on grass, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina enters this match on a high. Juan Manuel Cerundolo famously showed at the French Open that he should not be taken lightly, but if Davidovich Fokina plays at the level he did in Mallorca and has no letdown, he should win this match.
Prediction: Davidovich Fokina in 4
Tope
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina finally shook the monkey off his back by winning his maiden ATP Tour title, claimed on home soil in Mallorca after five career final defeats. The Spaniard will be hoping the breakthrough feeling travels well to SW19, where his best showings have been third-round exits in 2023 and 2025. Standing in his way is Juan Manuel Cerundolo, an Argentine who showed genuine grass-court promise at Eastbourne. Davidovich Fokina enters as a clear favourite, but the mental hangover of a title win can cut both ways, and Cerundolo is dangerous enough to punish any early softness.
Prediction: Davidovich Fokina in 5
Fabian Marozsan vs Thiago Agustin Tirante
Ilemona
Marozsan has produced some impressive tennis against top players over the last year and possesses the aggressive groundstrokes to succeed on quicker courts. Tirante is steadily improving but has done most of his best work on clay, making this a matchup that favors Marozsan’s more attacking style.
Prediction: Marozsan in 4
Zain
Thiago Agustin Tirante is a traditional clay-court player who likes to elongate rallies and make matches physical. On grass, that approach is not the most suitable, especially against a player like Fabian Marozsan, who relies on attacking creativity. That difference in styles on this surface is an advantage too big to ignore.
Prediction: Marozsan in 4
Tope
Grass remains unfamiliar territory for Thiago Agustin Tirante, who showed those rough edges at Eastbourne with a first-round exit against Toby Samuel. Marozsan, by contrast, looked every inch a grass-court threat at Mallorca in a semifinal run. The Hungarian’s aggressive ball-striking translates naturally to the surface, and while Tirante is knocking on the door of the top 50 and has the game to trouble anyone on his day, this is the wrong surface at the wrong time against the wrong opponent. Marozsan advances.
Prediction: Marozsan in 3
Novak Djokovic vs Wu Yibing
Ilemona
Djokovic returns to one of his most successful Grand Slam looking to add another deep Wimbledon run to his remarkable record. Wu has shown glimpses of the talent that took him into the Top 60, but his injury struggles have limited his rhythm, and Djokovic’s ability to absorb pace and take control of rallies should make this a difficult opening assignment.
Prediction: Djokovic in 3
Zain
Yet another search for a 25th Major begins for Novak Djokovic, who, on grass, will feel like this is his best chance to do so. But it will not start easily, as Wu Yibing is a player who will play aggressively enough to cause damage to Djokovic if he is not dialed in from the beginning. But despite that, Djokovic losing in the first round of a Major still looks like a far-fetched proposition, and he should eventually problem-solve his way to an opening-round win here.
Prediction: Djokovic in 4
Tope
Wu’s Wimbledon experience amounts to a single first-round loss in 2023, and nothing in his recent grass-court campaign suggests he has found answers on the surface. Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, opens his quest for a record-equalling eighth Wimbledon title. The compacted points and abbreviated geometry of grass should suit Djokovic’s current game and Wu will need a miracle; Djokovic needs only himself.
