Novak Djokovic has officially withdrawn from the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, as confirmed by the tournament’s social media channels. A brief statement on Instagram said: “Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament. We send him our best wishes and hope to see him back on court very soon.”
The 38-year-old Serbian star has been battling a persistent shoulder injury for several months. This issue led to his withdrawal from the Miami Open, where he had initially planned to participate.
Despite a strong start at Indian Wells earlier this month, Djokovic’s efforts were halted in the Round of 16 by Great Britain’s Jack Draper. Djokovic revealed he felt pain during the match and ultimately decided to withdraw from the second half of the Sunshine Double.
His decision to skip the Miami Open was based on prioritizing his long-term health, acknowledging the importance of recovery for his future performance.
Djokovic’s withdrawal from another major tournament suggests that he is still not fully recovered from his injury. It raises questions about his readiness for the upcoming Grand Slam events this summer, particularly the French Open and Wimbledon. With these two prestigious tournaments on the horizon, Djokovic may be conserving his energy for the challenges ahead.
The Monte Carlo Masters is scheduled to take place from April 4-12, with Carlos Alcaraz looking to defend his title.
Djokovic was eliminated from last year’s edition by Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in the Round of 32. The Serbian has not missed the event in the Principality since 2011, making his absence in Monte Carlo noteworthy. The Serbian has prioritized the Majors in recent years, but has still made Monte-Carlo one of his can’t-miss stops. It looks like even that is changing, though–at least for this year.
