Joao Fonseca ahead of Wimbledon.

Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions Including Joao Fonseca vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Summertime is in full swing in Europe, and that means one thing: the 2026 Wimbledon Championships are upon us. The intrigue at the most prestigious event in tennis could not be higher on the men’s side as Joao Fonseca looks to keep the momentum going after a huge run in Paris. As always, we at LWOT offer our roundtable analysis and predictions on each match. Let’s dive in.

Wimbledon Day 1 Predictions

Rafael Jodar vs Felix Gill

Ilemona
Both players are making one of the biggest appearances of their young careers, so handling the occasion will be just as important as the tennis itself. Jodar has produced the stronger results in recent months and looks slightly better equipped to deal with the demands of a best-of-five-set match.
Prediction: Jodar in 5

Zain
Rafael Jodar is another player who has suffered physically recently, with this in fact being his first match on grass this year. And while that will pose a serious challenge to the young Spaniard, against Felix Gill, if Jodar just remains consistent enough from the baseline, he should win, granted his physical issues are behind him.
Prediction: Jodar in 4

Tope
Rafael Jodar arrives at Wimbledon for his debut carrying serious momentum with the teenager knocking on the door of the top 20. The only question mark is grass, a surface he is yet to compete on at any level after a late withdrawal from Queen’s. His opponent, Felix Gill, gave fans a glimpse of his potential at Eastbourne last week but Gill simply does not carry the firepower to exploit whatever uncertainty Jodar brings to a grass-court debut. Expect the Spaniard to find his footing quickly and advance.
Prediction: Jodar in 3

Hamad Medjedovic vs Sebastian Ofner

Ilemona
This has the potential to be one of the more entertaining first-round contests, with both players capable of hitting through opponents. Medjedovic has looked increasingly confident throughout the season, and if he serves well, he should be able to dictate enough of the shorter rallies.
Prediction: Medjedovic in 5

Zain
This match will be dominated by big serving, as that is essential to each player’s game style. As such, I trust Hamad Medjedovic’s baseline and return game more than Sebastian Ofner’s, with that difference being the reason I think the Serbian wins this match.
Prediction: Medjedovic in 4

Tope
Two big-serving fringe contenders collide in the Wimbledon first round on Monday, with the Serbian Hamad Medjedovic carrying the favourite’s tag into a match that is far from a formality. The two met here last year though the Serb had to retire in the second set. Ofner has been in fine Challenger-level form in 2026, but the Wimbledon stage is a different proposition entirely. Medjedovic holds the mental edge when matches go deep, and on a surface where one break can swing a set, that composure under fire matters enormously. Expect Ofner to make it competitive, but Medjedovic’s nerve in tight moments should see him through.
Prediction: Medjedovic in 4

Jesper de Jong vs Rinky Hijikata

Ilemona
Hijikata’s aggressive returning and comfort on quicker courts have helped him collect several good wins over the past year. De Jong is a tough competitor, but Hijikata’s ability to absorb pressure and counterattack could be the difference.
Prediction: Hijikata in 4

Zain
Rinky Hijikata’s creative baselining can pose some questions here, but he will be tested by Jesper de Jong’s baseline tenacity. Still, the Dutchman is a player who prefers slower conditions, and on the faster grass, Hijikata should have just enough to win this encounter.
Prediction: Hijikata in 4

Joao Fonseca vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Ilemona
Fonseca’s rapid rise has continued this season, and his explosive shot-making gives him plenty of upside on grass. Bautista Agut remains one of the smartest competitors on tour, but Fonseca’s ability to take time away from opponents could help him earn an impressive opening-round win.
Prediction: Fonseca in 4

Zain
Having been plagued by injuries during the grass swing, Joao Fonseca gets a tough first-round match against Roberto Bautista Agut, a former semifinalist here. While the Spaniard’s level is far removed from what it was a couple of years ago, and Fonseca’s firepower should mean this match depends on him, I think Bautista Agut can make this physically challenging enough for him that I want to back the upset.
Prediction: Bautista Agut in 5
