The ATP 500 event in Hamburg isn’t exactly ideally placed in the calendar, with the French Open starting next week, but it still features a very good field, with many players looking to fine tune their game ahead of the second Slam of the season or even seize a rare opportunity to win a significant title. It will certainly be a great week of tennis in Hamburg, with Day 2 of the tournament sure to deliver plenty of high quality tennis.
ATP Hamburg Day 2 Predictions
Kamil Majchrzak vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli
Head-to-head: first meeting
While this should be a close match either way, with not much to separate both players in terms of ranking and level of play, Carabelli has been far more active during this clay season and generally playing at a very decent level. He is always a very tough nut to crack on this surface and his extra match play on this surface this year might make the difference here.
Prediction: Carabelli in 3
Yannick Hanfmann vs Max Schoenhaus
Head-to-head: first meeting
A clash between two different generations of German tennis. While the future might belong to Schoenhaus, Hanfmann is still a very solid ATP level player, especially on clay, and at this point in their respective careers he should still have the edge in this matchup and maybe even make a good run here, even if Schoenhaus could cause some trouble.
Prediction: Hanfmann in 2
Jakub Mensik vs Jan-Lennard Struff
Head-to-head: first meeting
Struff has been doing his best to stay in the Top 100, but, even if he has been somewhat struggling lately, at this point in their respective careers Mensik should have a very clear edge in this matchup. He hasn’t had a real breakthrough on clay yet, but he certainly has the ability to get some good results on this surface and could have a good run here.
Prediction: Mensik in 2
Francisco Cerundolo vs Alex de Minaur
Head-to-head: Cerundolo 1-1 de Minaur
This is a real blockbuster matchup for Round 1 of an ATP 500 on clay, featuring two players who have reached the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event on the surface and made the second week of Roland Garros in recent years. Both players have had somewhat disappointing clay seasons for their standards, especially de Minaur, but whoever wins her will have a great chance of making a deep run or even win the tournament.
Prediction: de Minaur in 3
