Jannik Sinner Miami Open, ahead of the French Open.

Unstoppable Jannik Sinner Makes History with Dominant Madrid Open Win

Jannik Sinner is a champion in Madrid for the very first time after dismantling Alexander Zverev 6–1 6–2 in the final.

In a match thoroughly dominated by the Italian, Sinner only strengthened his stranglehold at the top of men’s tennis while making history along the way.

Jannik Sinner: A Historic Run Rewriting the Record Books

The win means that Sinner has become the first player ever to win five Masters 1000 events in a row, a run that began at the Rolex Paris Masters last year. In between, he also added the year-end championships in Turin to his name.

The run by Sinner has been as dominant as any in history, with the Italian dropping just two sets during a 28-match winning streak at the Masters 1000 level. Sinner also became the first player to win the first four Masters 1000 events of a single season, following his victories at the Sunshine Double and Monte Carlo earlier this year.

The numbers behind Sinner’s surge are staggering. Not only has he swept through the biggest events outside of the Slams, but he has done so with a level of consistency rarely seen in the modern era. His ability to dominate elite opposition, including this one-sided final against Alexander Zverev, highlights just how far ahead he currently is from the rest of the field.

Rome Next, With More History on the Line

Next for the Italian is his hometown’s biggest event, the Masters 1000 tournament in Rome. Although his participation is not yet confirmed, Sinner will almost certainly enter as the overwhelming favorite if he does compete. Should he go on to win the title in Rome, Sinner would become just the second player in history to win every Masters 1000 event at least once, joining Novak Djokovic.

After that, Jannik Sinner will turn his attention to the French Open, where he will aim to complete a Career Grand Slam and become just the tenth man in tennis history to do so.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
