“I Was Surprised”: Carlos Alcaraz Reacts to Jannik Sinner’s Decision

With the clay swing now in full flow, the top men’s players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, are all set to begin their European clay campaigns in Monte Carlo this week.

Not only will the two be competing for the title, but the World No.1 ranking will also be on the line, with whoever wins the tournament set to finish the week at the top of the rankings.

Contrasting Start to the 2026 Season

The two arrive in Monaco after vastly contrasting starts to the 2026 season. Carlos Alcaraz was at his brilliant best early in the year, completing his Career Grand Slam in Melbourne before lifting the title in Doha.

However, momentum shifted during the Sunshine Double. While Alcaraz endured a below-par run across Indian Wells and Miami, Jannik Sinner surged into form, claiming both titles and reaffirming his dominance after a relatively slow start to the season.

That swing in results has set up a fascinating dynamic heading into the clay season, with both players now carrying very different forms into Monte Carlo.

A Potential Clash in the Final

The quick turnaround from Miami to Monte Carlo raised doubts over whether Sinner would participate. However, the Italian quickly put those concerns to rest, becoming one of the first players to arrive and practice in Monaco. His decision even surprised his biggest rival, with Alcaraz openly admitting his reaction:

“Honestly, I was surprised that Jannik, after Indian Wells, Miami, and the whole tour, came to Monte Carlo to play, but obviously that speaks to the great physical condition he’s in right now, what he’s capable of.”

Interestingly, despite facing each other six times last year, the two have yet to meet in 2026. A potential clash in Monte Carlo would therefore signal a final meeting–and raise the stakes even further. If that showdown materializes, it will not only decide the Monte Carlo title but also the World No.1 ranking, setting the stage for a blockbuster clash to ignite this year’s clay swing.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
