After over a year of waiting, we finally get to see Joao Fonseca going up against one of the “New Two” as he faces off against Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of Indian Wells.
Both players enter the match having played one of their best matches of the year, and we bring you a complete guide to what will already be one of the most-watched matches of 2026.
Jannik Sinner vs Joao Fonseca: Indian Wells 2026
Match Preview
This will be the first meeting at any level between two players who primarily operate on the same principle: see a tennis ball and attack it with as much power as you can.
Obviously, at this stage of their careers, Sinner is the infinitely better mover and returner, with more refined ball quality. However, neutral exchanges or simple cross-court patterns are where Fonseca will look to cause damage. When it becomes a stationary, linear rally, the young Brazilian has more than enough firepower to trouble anyone.
Although it will not come down solely to that, it will be interesting to see which player can convert more of his attacking opportunities and, conversely, turn defence into attack more efficiently. The more experienced and overall better player, Sinner, should be able to hold the advantage in these departments. However, Fonseca has shown enough promise, especially after his demolition job against Tommy Paul in the previous round, to have a puncher’s chance in this match. While he may not be the match favourite, he will undoubtedly once again be a heavy crowd favourite.
