Italy etched their name deeper into tennis history on Sunday, defeating Spain 2-0 in the Davis Cup final to claim the title for a third consecutive year — a feat not achieved by any nation in over half a century.
Playing on home soil at Bologna’s Unipol Arena and without world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who withdrew before the knockout stage to recover from a demanding season, Italy relied on experience and emerging talent to see off a Spanish side also missing Carlos Alcaraz.
Berrettini and Cobolli Deliver Under Pressure
Matteo Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, set the tone in the opening rubber, dispatching Pablo Carreño Busta 6-3 6-4 in 79 minutes. The 29-year-old fired 13 aces, faced no break points and converted the only two break opportunities he created to give Italy a 1-0 lead.
The tie then hung dramatically on the second singles. Spain’s Jaume Munar stormed to the first set 6-1 and broke early in the second, threatening to force a decider. But 23-year-old Flavio Cobolli mounted a stunning comeback, clawing back to win a 7-5 tiebreak and then breaking in the eleventh game of the third set before serving out to love for a 1-6 7-6 7-5 victory.
Cobolli collapsed to the court in jubilation as Italy clinched the title without needing doubles.
A Fourth Crown and a New Dynasty
The result marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title overall (1976, 2023, 2024, 2025) and their third straight success–the first three-peat since the United States won from 1968–1972 in the modern era.
Captain Filippo Volandri praised his team’s resilience: “We knew it would be tough without Jannik, but Matteo and Flavio showed incredible heart. This group believes in each other that’s why we keep winning.”
Spain, chasing a seventh crown, have now lost three of their last four finals. Italy, meanwhile, have won 13 consecutive ties since 2023 and stand alone as the dominant force in men’s team tennis.
