Aryna Sabalenka Credits Novak Djokovic for US Open Triumph

For the second consecutive season, Aryna Sabalenka has been the standout player on the WTA tour, compiling a stunning 59–11 record with four titles under her belt. With the year-end No. 1 ranking all but secured, Sabalenka’s consistency has been unmatched this year. Yet as she entered the 2025 US Open, questions lingered. Could she finally cap off another spectacular season with a Major title?

Major Heartbreaks in 2025

While Sabalenka’s year has been exceptional on paper, the big stages told a more complicated story. She was the only player to reach the semifinals at all four mMjors and the final in three, but each time, the trophy slipped away in painful fashion.

Madison Keys edged her in an epic Australian Open final. Coco Gauff beat her in the Roland Garros final, a match which will be remembered more for Sabalenka’s post-match remarks than for the tennis itself. Then came Wimbledon, where Amanda Anisimova stunned her in the semifinals.

Despite no truly bad loss, the emotional toll of falling just short time and again weighed heavily. Her confidence, usually one of her weapons, was beginning to waver.

Djokovic’s Advice That Changed Everything

Searching for answers and mental clarity, Sabalenka turned to one of the game’s greatest minds: Novak Djokovic.

“I just wanted to know how he was preparing himself for those big matches, what was the focus and what was his mindset going into the match. So we talked for an hour probably, but with Novak you always can spend more than that talking and asking for advice. And then later on, going to the US Open final, I remembered what he said, what he told me, and I think it helped me to get the title.”

Djokovic, renowned for his unmatched mental toughness, appears to have helped Sabalenka rediscover her own. His words provided the calm and clarity she needed to convert all that consistent excellence into championship glory.

The Result: A Dominant US Open Run

Motivated and mentally locked in, Sabalenka stormed through the draw in New York. She dropped just a single set all tournament and exacted revenge on Amanda Anisimova in the final, sealing her fourth career major title.

Sometimes, even the very best need a spark. For Aryna Sabalenka, a simple yet powerful conversation with Novak Djokovic was that spark — the reminder that mental strength is the final step between greatness and glory.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
