We have predictions for every match at ATP Shanghai.
ATP Shanghai Day 2 Predictions
Jenson Brooksby vs James Trotter
Head-to-head: First meeting
James Trotter has the firepower to compete on faster hard courts, from the great serve to a wide repertoire of net tactics. But overall many expected a bit more from him this year and he hasn’t made any significant ranking leap. A Shanghai run would be an option to turn in around and he played some excellent stuff in the qualifying. It’s just that the draw could have been kinder with Jenson Brooksby knowing how to neutralize and likely forcing him into too many extended points, where his backhand might not stand the test.
Prediction: Brooksby in 2
Kamil Majchrzak vs Ethan Quinn
Head-to-head: Majchrzak 1-0
Kamil Majchrzak was really comfortable against Ethan Quinn at Wimbledon this year, going on to reach the fourth round. He later produced a breathtaking comeback win to defeat Karen Khachanov at the US Open, but the cost of that was a rib injury that forced him to retire in the third round in New York. He’s only just making his comeback, so it’s unclear what his level will be. But as long as Ethan Quinn gives him enough time to settle into the match, the flat backhand aggression will probably bother him again.
Prediction: Majchrzak in 3
Marcos Giron vs Alejandro Tabilo
Head-to-head: Tabilo 1-0
Alejandro Tabilo must have taken so much confidence from his title run in Chengdu, especially winning it in such dramatic circumstances over Lorenzo Musetti. Despite losing to Zizou Bergs in Tokyo round one, he was back on the court to qualify in Shanghai just a few days later. It wasn’t a particularly taxing campaign, so he should be fresh for this clash against Marcos Giron. And given the American’s rather mediocre form this season, it’s tough not to side with Tabilo right now.
Prediction: Tabilo in 3
Bu Yunchaokete vs Juan Manuel Cerundolo
Head-to-head: First meeting
The Asian Swing of last year was Bu Yunchaokete’s breakthrough moment with the Chinese making back-to-back semifinals in Hangzhou and Beijing. But 12 months later he lost in the opening round of both events and has only picked up one Top 50 win all season. Juan Manuel Cerundolo’s all-round game has improved recently, even to a point where he picked up a hard-court Challenger title. But typically, Bu picks up the wins you’d expect him to get. It’s later into the event that he tends to struggle.
Prediction: Bu in 3
