Carlos Alcaraz Wins Tokyo Open for Eighth Title of the Season

Carlos Alcaraz captured his eighth title of the 2025 season after defeating Taylor Fritz in straight sets in the Tokyo Open final, exacting revenge on the American who had beaten him at the Laver Cup just a week earlier.

The Spaniard’s aggressive brand of tennis shone throughout the week as he dropped only one set in the entire tournament. In the final, he produced another dominant display, beating Fritz 6-4 6-2 to lift the trophy.

How Did the Tokyo Open Final Play Out?

The match began at a blistering pace, with both players striking the ball cleanly and trading heavy blows. The early games were tightly contested, producing several popcorn points for the crowd.

Alcaraz piled on the pressure during Fritz’s service games, creating multiple break point chances. Fritz held firm at first, saving five break points, but the Spaniard finally converted his sixth opportunity to take the lead. From there, Alcaraz served out the opening set 6-4.

Before the start of the second set, Fritz called for a medical timeout. Alcaraz capitalized immediately, breaking in the first game to seize control. With the American running out of ideas, Alcaraz broke again to all but seal the match.

Although Fritz managed to retrieve one of the breaks to stay in contention, the Spaniard remained composed and eventually served out the match, sealing a 6-4 6-4 victory and the Tokyo Open title.

What Does This Title Mean for Alcaraz?

This win marked Alcaraz’s eighth title of 2025 and his 67th match victory of the season, both personal bests in a single year. It is also his 24th career Tour title.

The Spaniard continues to achieve remarkable consistency, becoming only the fourth player after the Big 3 (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic) to reach at least nine consecutive Tour-level finals since 1990—a streak that began on the clay courts of Monte Carlo.

With the triumph in Tokyo, Alcaraz also extends his lead at the top of the ATP Live Rankings and the 2025 Race, keeping the pressure firmly on Jannik Sinner, who will contest the final in Beijing.

All eyes now turn to the upcoming Shanghai Masters, where Alcaraz will enter as one of the clear favorites given his current form. If his aggressive and confident play continues, he could well add another Masters title to his growing collection.

About Zain Mustafa

Being brought up in a sports-watching home, some of the spheres flying across the TV screen stuck with me more than others, the yellow fuzzy one probably the most. A lefty Mallorcan got me into it, a righty Murcian has kept me in it after him, but to be honest, once I was in, I never felt like leaving anyway.
