This week’s WTA tournament in Monterrey has a surprisingly good field for a tournament played the week right before the US Open. While there are no Top 10 players in the draw, it features plenty of quality players who will have ambitions of a deep run in New York. As such, this week should be filled with high quality tennis.
WTA Monterrey predictions
Donna Vekic vs Elise Mertens
Head-to-head: Vekic 1-1 Mertens
Vekic had the best season of her career in 2024 but hasn’t really managed to back it up this year. At this point in their respective careers, Mertens is the better player and should have the advantage in this matchup even if it should be quite a close match. It could very well go the distance–if Vekic replicates the level she showed in her opening match against Sakkari.
Prediction: Mertens in 3
Rebecca Sramkova vs Leylah Fernandez
Head-to-head: first meeting
Leylah Fernandez had the second best week of her career in Washington, winning her first ever 500 title, but followed it up with back-to-back first0match losses in Canada and Cincinnati. The US Open is where she managed her best career result so far, with her shocking run to the final in 2021 as a teenager, and she will be looking to gain some momentum here to try and replicate that run. Sramkova won’t be an easy opponent, but Fernandez should be able to get through this one.
Prediction: Fernandez in 3
Tatjana Maria vs Linda Noskova
Head-to-head: first meeting
Maria won her biggest career title at Queen’s earlier this year but outside grass she rarely ever makes big runs. On a hard court, Noskova should have a significant edge here, even if she was on a very bad streak prior to this tournament, with three consecutive losses coming in, stopping her from breaking into the Top 20.
Prediction: Noskova in 3
Emma Navarro vs Alycia Parks
Head-to-head: Navarro 1-0 Parks
Navarro hasn’t really managed to match the heights she reached in 2024 this year, but now her home Slam is coming and she will be hoping for a deep run there. She has been on a very bad streak of results lately, though, and could definitely use a run here to gain some confidence back. In this all-American matchup she should have a considerable edge and advance.
Prediction: Navarro in 2
