Tennis fans have been waiting for a long time to see one of their favorite entertainers back on a tennis court. Australian star Nick Kyrgios hasn’t played a tour-level match since March when he last competed at the Miami Masters. After his second-round defeat, Kyrgios took a break from the sport owing to a combination of multiple injuries.
As the Wimbledon hangover has come to an end, the tour moves to the North American hard courts. The first of those will be the 500-point tournament in Washington, D.C., and to the excitement of the fans, Kyrgios will be taking part in both the singles and doubles draws. This will be his first appearance on a tennis court since March, and appropriately, in a tournament he has twice won previously.
Kyrgios and Monfils partner for doubles
That’s not the most exciting part of his return, though. He will be partnering with another entertainer of the ages, Gael Monfils, for his doubles competition. Both Monfils and Kyrgios are loved for their on-court antics and tricks that leave fans in awe. They are not at all textbook and are more of the freestyle lot, which is adored by most.
Monfils doesn’t have a notable doubles record, but will be happy to be partnering with a Grand Slam doubles champion. Kyrgios, along with Thanasi Kokkinakis, had won the 2022 Australian Open doubles. The Australian knows a thing or two about doubles tennis, and it will be interesting if it is enough to go all the way once again at the Washington Open.
