With the conclusion of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, at least five tennis players have announced their retirement from the sport. One of them is a Major champion and a former World No. 2, but will play the remainder of the season before departing. So, who made the list?
Five More Players Announce Tennis Retirement In 2025
1. Petra Kvitova
Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova announced on the eve of Wimbledon that she is playing her final season on tour. The Czech lefty was given a wild card into the tournament, but there wasn’t a fairy tale farewell as she lost her opening match to Emma Navarro. Kvitova, 35, is the only player in this list who intends to see out the second half of the season before hanging up her racket. She plans to play the North American hard court swing this summer, with the US Open expected to be her final tournament.
2. Fabio Fognini
Fabio Fognini, 38, had long hinted that he was unlikely to play beyond the 2025 season. He played his final Italian Open in his home country two months ago and left the door open to stick around for the rest of the year. However, after a heroic performance in which he pushed Carlos Alcaraz to five sets in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon, Fognini chose to retire within a week, holding an urgent press conference at the Championships to reveal the news.
3. Tim van Rijthoven
Tim van Rijthoven formally announced his retirement this month, having played just 11 competitive matches in the last two and-a-half years. The Dutchman reached his highest ceiling during the 2022 grass swing, where he shockingly won his first ATP match and title in the same week in his home tournament in s-Hertogenbosch. With persistent elbow injuries and a deteriorating ranking, van Rijthoven opted to leave the tennis scene. He turned 28 less than three months ago.
4. Michaella Krajicek
Another Dutch player who has retired is Michaella Krajicek. She is the younger half-sister of 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek and a cousin to American doubles specialist Austin Krajicek. Her last match was in July 2024. Michaella, 36, won three WTA singles titles and peaked at a career-high ranking of No. 30.
5. Paris Corley
American Paris Corley played her final match at only 27 in May before filing for retirement with the ITIA in June 2025. Corley reached a personal best ranking of No. 657 in singles. She won six ITF doubles titles in her career.
