24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner’s French Open semifinal contained many breathtaking rallies. The 38-year-old Serbian tried desperately to keep up with the world No. 1 throughout the contest. One extraordinary rally in the second set stood out the most, sending the fans inside Court Philippe-Chatrier into raptures.
Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner play Point of the Year at the French Open.
Sinner was serving at 0-1 AD-40. Djokovic got a deep return into play, beginning an intense rally. Both men changed the direction of the point several times, but could not hit through their opponent. After 19 shots, Djokovic elected to be proactive and hit a drop shot, a tactic he used regularly during the match.
Despite the seven-time Wimbledon champion’s drop shot being excellent, Sinner somehow managed to retrieve it and hit a short angled backhand. Djokovic retrieved it and looked to have won the point again with a well-judged shot down the line. But the Italian was not done, playing an even better shot than his previous one to keep the point alive.
Djokovic responded with a backhand drop volley that Sinner also retrieved with another angled backhand. The iconic point ended with the three-time winner at Roland-Garros hitting a low volley down the line. Djokovic, understandably gasping for breath, managed to smile at the crowd, many of whom were on their feet after watching one of the best points seen in the last few years in Paris.
The 26-shot rally was a testament to both men. Sinner’s improvement on clay during the last couple of seasons has been exceptional, while Djokovic’s continued high level at 38 years old remains inspiring. Hopefully, the pair will play more epic matches before Djokovic’s career ends.
