Emma Raducanu Sinks Further After Qatar Open Defeat

Emma Raducanu’s struggles on the WTA Tour continued as she set an unwanted record following her latest defeat in the first round of the Qatar Open. The 2021 US Open champion vowed to play more tournaments in 2025 to regain form and match fitness, but her campaign has hit a stumbling block as she suffered her third consecutive first-round loss.

Facing Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in Doha, the British tennis star could not repeat her Australian Open victory over the same opponent, falling 6-3 7-5 in a disappointing performance. This marked her fourth consecutive defeat–the longest losing streak of her professional career–highlighting ongoing issues with consistency and confidence.

A Season of Struggles

Raducanu began the 2025 season on a positive note, defeating Alexandrova in the first round of the Australian Open. However, her campaign quickly derailed with a crushing 6-1 6-0 loss to world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the third round in Melbourne. Since then, she has suffered first-round exits in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and now Qatar, raising concerns about her ability to compete consistently at the highest level.

A key factor in her latest loss was her serving struggles, particularly on her second serve. Against Alexandrova, the 22-year-old won just 33% of her second-serve points and faced eight break points. She managed to save five but ultimately failed to maintain her lead in the crucial moments. She started both sets strong, leading 3-1 in the opener and again in the second, but she could not capitalize on her advantages.

Coaching Uncertainty

Raducanu’s recent slump comes amid instability in her coaching setup. Nick Cavaday stepped down due to health reasons after the Australian Open, leaving her without a permanent coach. Former mentor Jane O’Donoghue has been providing temporary support, but the lack of a structured team impacts her ability to adapt and improve on tour.

The young Brit’s willingness to increase her tournament schedule has been praised, but her attempts to rebuild confidence are proving difficult without a solid foundation in place. Initially prepared to enter the Abu Dhabi Open through qualifying, the 2021 US Open champion was granted a last-minute wild card into the main draw. However, her inability to string together wins suggests deeper issues in her game that require urgent attention.

What’s Next for Emma Raducanu?

It remains unclear where Raducanu will play next as she navigates this challenging period. Some experts believe she may benefit from taking a short break to reassess her approach and finalize a coaching team before returning to competition. Others suggest that continuing to compete, despite the losses, is the best way for her to regain rhythm and confidence.

The British player faces crucial decisions about her immediate future with the clay and grass-court seasons approaching. Whether she continues to push through her struggles on tour or takes time away to regroup, the coming weeks could determine the trajectory of her 2025 season.
