The first week of ATP 500 tournaments this season starts in a few days. One of these is the prestigious Rotterdam Open, a longtime fixture on the ATP Tour. Two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev are among the players on the entry list. Five players, including one of the most significant names in tennis, elected to withdraw from the event.
Five Players Withdraw From 2025 Rotterdam Open
Which Players Have Withdrawn?
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal was the most disappointing for tournament organizers. He cited the need to rest after winning his second Australian Open last week as the reason for not playing. The Italian was set to defend his title from last year at the Rotterdam Open before deciding not to compete.
Jack Draper is the second player to withdraw from the Rotterdam Open. The emerging young star injured his hip in the Australian Open fourth round against Carlos Alcaraz. He had won three consecutive matches in deciding fifth sets before that contest with Alcaraz, which may have contributed to the injury.
Grigor Dimitrov also withdrew from the Rotterdam Open due to injury. The former Wimbledon semifinalist retired from the opening round of the Australian Open due to hip and groin problems. It is unknown when fans will see the 34-year-old in action again.
Sebastian Korda is the fourth man to withdraw from the ATP 500 tournament. He returned at the start of this season after being out with an elbow injury for a few months. Last year’s Citi Open champion has not revealed whether an injury is the reason for his withdrawal.
Jordan Thompson is the final player to withdraw from the Rotterdam Open. The Australian announced he was taking a break from tennis after suffering a calf strain during his home Grand Slam, which ended in a second-round loss to Nuno Borges.
Who Replaces Those Five Players in the Draw?
Jakub Mensik takes Sinner’s place at the Rotterdam Open. The 19-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in tennis. While no one can fully replace Sinner, Menik’s presence should attract fans to the tournament.
The experienced David Goffin benefits from Draper’s decision to withdraw. Admittedly, the Belgian is past his prime, but he can still produce good tennis that can challenge highly-ranked players and make them need their best tennis to win.
Roberto Bautista Agut is another veteran in the main draw. He will play at the Rotterdam Open instead of Dimitrov. The Spaniard showed how impressive his level can still be during a stunning run to the European Open title in Antwerp last year.
Fabian Marozsan replaces Korda. The Hungarian’s level has improved in the last couple of years, especially outside clay courts. His powerful forehand causes opponents significant problems when it is firing near full capacity.
Lorenzo Sonego will play at the Rotterdam after Thompson opted to withdraw. Sonego had a superb Australian Open campaign, reaching the quarterfinals. If he performs at that level again, the Italian could have a deep run in Rotterdam.
