World No. 1 Jannik Sinner officially withdrew from the 2025 ABN AMRO Open, tournament organizers announced on Monday (January 28). The Italian star, who triumphed in Rotterdam last year, has opted to skip the ATP 500 event due to the need for rest after his grueling campaign at the Australian Open.
The 23-year-old recently claimed his third Grand Slam title, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 in Sunday’s final in Melbourne. His decision means he will not defend his Rotterdam title, leaving the tournament without its reigning champion.
“After consulting with my team, we had to take the difficult decision to withdraw from the ABN AMRO Open,” Sinner said in a statement on the tournament’s website. “My body needs time to rest after the long run in Australia. I have great memories of winning the title in front of amazing crowds at Rotterdam Ahoy last year and hope to be back there soon. I wish [tournament director] Richard [Krajicek] and the whole team a great event.”
Sinner’s 2025 season has already been eventful as he continues establishing himself as one of the most dominant players on the ATP Tour. His Australian Open victory marked his third Major title in just over a year, following his previous triumphs in Melbourne and at the US Open in 2024. The Italian tennis star’s withdrawal from Rotterdam signals his focus on maintaining peak physical condition for the remainder of the season as he looks to build on his success and cement his place at the top of the rankings.
World No. 11 Grigor Dimitrov has also withdrawn from the Rotterdam Open after being forced to retire due to injury during the Brisbane International and the Australian Open earlier this month. With Sinner and Dimitrov out, the field at the ATP 500 event will now be led by world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, who is set to make his tournament debut as the top seed.
Other top-ranked contenders include Daniil Medvedev, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev. The competition will also feature Holger Rune, Jack Draper, Hubert Hurkacz, Arthur Fils, and former champions Felix Auger-Aliassime and Stan Wawrinka. Dutch favorite Tallon Griekspoor will also be in action.
Meanwhile, the withdrawals of Sinner and Dimitrov have allowed Czech rising star Jakub Mensik and veteran Roberto Bautista Agut to enter the main draw. Currently at a career-high No. 48 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Mensik is set to debut in Rotterdam, continuing his rapid ascent in the men’s game.
With Sinner absent, all eyes will be on Alcaraz as he leads a highly competitive field in the Netherlands. The tournament promises to be an exciting contest, even without its defending champion, as players vie for the prestigious ATP 500 title at the Rotterdam Ahoy.
