Joao Fonseca Cracks Top 100 as Youngest Since Carlos Alcaraz

Joao Fonseca’s rapid ascent continued on Monday as he entered the Top 100 ATP Rankings after a phenomenal debut at the Australian Open.

Over the last year, the Brazillian has climbed an impressive 552 spots from #651 to achieve a career-best ranking of World #99.

Since his impressive title victory at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, the 18-year-old has maintained his momentum, kicking off his 2025 season with an ATP Challenger Tour title in Canberra before qualifying for his first Major main draw at the Australian Open, where he pulled off a massive upset against ninth seed Andrey Rublev in the first round.

The stunning victory over the eight-seeded Russian made him the first teenager since Mario Ancic (against Roger Federer in the 2002 Wimbledon Championships) to beat a Top 10 player in the first round of a Grand Slam.

The teenager is now the youngest player in the Top 100 since Carlos Alcaraz in October 2021 and the youngest Brazilian ever to enter the Top 100 in the ATP Rankings history. Additionally, he is the second-youngest South American teenager to break into the Top 100 this century, following Juan Martin del Potro.

Before Fonseca, the youngest Brazilian to crack the Top 100 was Cassio Motta, who did so at 19 in 1979. Former World #1 and compatriot Gustavo Kuerten achieved this milestone just before turning 20.

Having turned professional last February, Fonseca currently ranks second in the ATP Live Race to Jeddah, trailing only Learner Tien by 25 points.

Interestingly, he defeated the American to win the boys’ single match at the Australian Open in 2023 before beating him again in last year’s Next Gen title match in Jeddah. Tien himself pulled off a surprising victory in Melbourne, stunning fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round and advancing to the fourth round in his Melbourne bow.

As the youngest player to achieve this milestone since Carlos Alcaraz, Fonseca stands on the brink of a remarkable career and with the array of skills and weapons at his disposal, his journey has just begun.
