Why 2025 Might Be Novak Djokovic’s Last Stand

Novak Djokovic is a man with nothing to prove. No matter how you look at it, he has the best resumé in the Open Era. He has won everything there is to win multiple times, and now it’s just a matter of just how far he can go. 24 Slams is great, but the Serb is not content with that and will look to add more this year.

Djokovic’s 2025 Outlook

2024 was a weird year for Djokovic. After a dominant 2023, where he won three Slams, Djokovic didn’t quite look at his best for most of 2024, except, of course, at the Olympics, where he finally got his coveted gold medal. Some believe it is just a natural decline, which would make perfect sense, but many (perhaps including Djokovic himself) believe he had an off year where he lacked some motivation aside from the Olympics and will be back with a vengeance in 2025.

The last 15 years have shown us that it is not wise to write off Djokovic, whenever it looks like he’s done he tends to prove everyone wrong. He takes great care of his body and has already managed to extend his career beyond all reasonable expectations.

At some point, he won’t be able to keep going anymore, but it might still take a while for that day to come. What Djokovic can do this year might well be the most interesting story of 2025: does he still have it in him to beat the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz at Slams? Will he fall further and even leave the top 10 for good?

It is impossible to predict, but the season’s first big event will happen at Djokovic’s favorite hunting ground in Melbourne so that we will have a very good idea in a couple of weeks. One thing is certain: no player, including Sinner and Alcaraz, will be happy to see Djokovic in their half of the draw in Melbourne.
