WTA Brisbane Day 1 Predictions Including Marie Bouzkova vs Talia Gibson

Main draw action at the 2025 WTA Brisbane International begins with eight singles matches on Sunday. Will be a while before the seeds come into play, but there’s no shortage of quality matchups on Day 1 already. Maya Joint and Talia Gibson are fascinating wild cards, while Rebecca Sramkova and Elina Avanesyan face off in a clash of two Top 50 players. Who do you think will advance to the next stage of the event?

WTA Brisbane Day 1 Predictions

Ashlyn Krueger vs Moyuka Uchijima

Head-to-head: Krueger 2-0

Ashlyn Krueger’s progress stalled a little in 2024, but the easy power of the American will one day turn her into a very dangerous player. Even in a season where she was rather unimpressive and Moyuka Uchijima had the best moments of her career, Krueger absolutely blasted her opponent off the court when they faced each other in Cincinnati. Even counting in the inconsistency of her game, the 20-year-old looks like a pretty firm favorite in her opening match of the season.
Prediction: Krueger in 2

Maddison Inglis vs Maya Joint

Head-to-head: First meeting

Maya Joint announced she’s turning pro recently and while that’s not a decision that will please the fans of the University of Texas, it means we’ll get to keep watching her on the biggest stages of professional tennis. For large chunks of 2024, she was a winning machine, slowing down a bit towards the end of the season. But in a match like this, it’s tough not to fancy her potential over her seasoned but rather unspectacular countrywoman in Maddison Inglis.
Prediction: Joint in 3

Elina Avanesyan vs Rebecca Sramkova

Head-to-head: Avanesyan 1-0

Rebecca Sramkova will be getting some incredible opportunities this year, all thanks to the brilliant form she displayed in the latter half of last year. She always had the potential, but it took her a while to put it all together. Now it’s a question of how long she’ll maintain that form. It would be good to kick off 2025 with a win, but Elina Avanesyan is a tricky opponent to face. Her variety-packed game might be easier for Sramkova to handle on the Brisbane hard court than when they played in Budapest two years ago.
Prediction: Sramkova in 3

Marie Bouzkova vs Talia Gibson

Head-to-head: First meeting

Talia Gibson’s off-season was a little shorter than for most players in this event as she kept playing ITF events at home throughout November with a few decent runs. She’s definitely among the brightest young prospects from Australia, but beating someone of Marie Bouzkova’s class would be something pretty new for her. The Czech generally makes you produce high-quality offense if you want to beat her and Gibson will likely go down trying to find it.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 2

About Damian Kust

Damian is a connoisseur of the lower tiers of men's tennis and would probably watch the World No. 700 play a ferret if he could see it from the stands. Always pleased by a beautiful one-handed backhand or classic volleying technique.
