Aryna Sabalenka has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Iga Swiatek‘s doping violation, claiming people are often “used to overreacting” in such situations. The World No. 2 was asked about her rival’s case during her pre-season preparations for the 2025 season at the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi.
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek recently served a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance TMZ in August 2024. The Polish star successfully argued that the positive test resulted from accidental contamination of her melatonin medication. This comes just a few months after men’s World No.1 Jannik Sinner tested positive twice for clostebol. However, unlike Swiatek, the Italian escaped suspension but got ATP points deducted from Indian Wells, where the failed doping test occurred.
Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek was deemed at “no significant fault” and was provisionally suspended from September 12th to October 4th, missing key WTA tournaments, including Beijing and Wuhan. This absence played a role in the three-time Grand Slam champion overtaking her as the World No. 1 in October.
Sabalenka, who ended 2024 as the year-end World No. 1 after claiming both the Australian Open and US Open titles, is preparing for the 2025 season in Abu Dhabi, where Swiatek is also competing.
Sabalenka’s Response
Speaking to The National at the World Tennis League, the reigning World No.1 Sabalenka decided to be pragmatic about the situation. She refrained from making detailed comments but emphasized the tendency of people to overreact.
“People are really used to overreacting before figuring stuff out, so I don’t want to leave any comments,” Sabalenka said. “I believe in clean sport, and there’s nothing else I can add.”
Swiatek and Sabalenka have developed one of the fiercest rivalries in women’s tennis. They have faced each other 12 times on the WTA Tour, with the Polish tennis star leading their head-to-head record 8-4.
While the two have yet to meet in a Grand Slam singles final, their clashes have defined the WTA season in recent years. In 2024, the 23-year-old won their meetings in the Madrid and Rome finals, but the 26-year-old triumphed in the Cincinnati Open semifinals.
The upcoming Australian Open could set the stage for their next showdown, as both players are favorites for the title. The Belarusian tennis star will be the top seed at the Brisbane International, while Swiatek will represent Poland at the United Cup in preparation for Melbourne.
Sabalenka, the reigning two-time Australian Open champion, aims to become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to win three consecutive titles Down Under.
