Tuesday’s schedule at the 2024 WTA Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey will feature the seven remaining first-round singles matches. Recent Prague finalist Magdalena Frech takes on Nadia Podoroska, while Linda Noskova will have to fend off the tricky doubles specialist Anna Danilina. Who do you think will make it to the next stage of the event?
WTA Monterrey Day 2 Predictions
Carol Zhao vs Petra Martic
Head-to-head: First meeting
This is the first time Carol Zhao has made it through qualifying at a main tour event this year and it’s a great opportunity for the Canadian. Her form hasn’t been great though and Petra Martic might be a step too far. The Croat is barely hanging on in the Top 100 right now, but remains an extremely skillful player. Her big serve should also thrive in the conditions in Monterrey, allowing her to dictate the points from the very start.
Prediction: Martic in 2
Xiyu Wang vs Tatjana Maria
Head-to-head: Wang 2-1
Tatjana Maria’s recent form was pretty concerning, but it seems like the veteran is back in the driver’s seat after making the final in Barranquilla. She didn’t face anyone of Xiyu Wang’s quality there though and even with her slice-and-dice game being so good at altitude, are the conditions in Monterrey fast enough for her to gain an advantage? The 37-year-old has had a long career and seems to be running out of steam by now, not sure she can still get this.
Prediction: Wang in 3
Linda Noskova vs Anna Danilina
Head-to-head: First meeting
Anna Danilina plays singles only sparingly these days and the two wins posted in the qualifying here were enough to double her tally from the past two seasons (she also qualified for Hong Kong last year). The 500m altitude in Monterrey certainly makes it a bit easier for the doubles specialist from Kazakhstan. Linda Noskova is kind of one of the players you want to draw if you’re looking for a big upset, but the even the erratic Czech should be able to end Danilina’s run.
Prediction: Noskova in 2
Magdalena Frech vs Nadia Podoroska
Head-to-head: Podoroska 1-0
Magdalena Frech just recently made her first WTA Tour final and is proving to have a lot more staying power than everyone thought. But this won’t be an easy opener for her in the Monterrey conditions. Nadia Podoroska ended a losing streak in the best way possible last week, picking up the title in Barranquilla. At 500m altitude, the Argentinian’s weaponry will be a lot more tricky to handle. She won’t be without a chance and in fact, she probably takes it if she executes right.
Prediction: Podoroska in 3
