The tennis tournaments at the Paris Olympics continue with 14 women’s singles matches on Sunday. The quest for Gold features some of the top players in the sport. As always, we here at LastWordOnTennis will predict all matches for you. We split the 14 matches into four articles. The other articles feature Barbora Krejcikova vs Sara Sorribes Tormo, Coco Guaff vs Ajla Tomljanovic and Caroline Wozniacki vs Mayar Sherif. Predicting these matches are Yesh Ginsburg and Jordan Reynolds. Who do you think will move on to Round 2?
We will link to our other Olympic predictions, including doubles, at the bottom of the article. Enjoy!
Paris Olympics Women’s Day 2 Predictions
Linda Noskova (Czech Republic) vs Xiyu Wang (China)
Yesh
Noskova is coming off a solid run in Prague, and she’s probably okay with her semifinal loss as that gives extra rest before Paris. She shouldn’t have too much trouble with Wang.
Prediction: Noskova in 2
Jordan
Noskova lost a very tight semifinal in Prague to Magda Linette heading into the Olympics. Clay is not the Czech’s best surface, but she is still the favourite against Wang, who struggles even more on the dirt and has nearly all of her success on hard courts.
Prediction: Noskova in 2
Clara Burel (France) vs Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic)
Yesh
Siniakova is surely relishing a real medal chance in doubles, but she’s got a chance to make some noise in the singles draw, too. It starts against a vulnerable-looking young Frenchwoman. Can she take advantage? Or does she save her energy for doubles anyway?
Prediction: Siniakova in 3
Jordan
These two have played twice this year. Burel beat Siniakova on the hard courts in Linz, before the Czech got her revenge on grass in Bad Homburg. Clay probably represents Burel’s best chance of beating Siniakova in singles. It is likely to be a tight battle, but I give Burel a slight edge. Siniakova may also have one eye on the doubles, where she has a much better chance of winning a medal.
Prediction: Burel in 3
Donna Vekic (Croatia) vs Lucia Bronzetti (Italy)
Yesh
Bronzetti likes the clay and a good doubles draw should give her confidence. Vekic is a better player, but I think Bronzetti’s clay-court movement might give her an edge here.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 3
Jordan
It will be interesting to observe how quickly Vekic finds her feet in her first match since that epic Wimbledon semifinal loss to Jasmine Paolini. Bronzetti is very dangerous when her forehand is working, but she Italian’s consistency is her Achilles heel. However, something tells me she could catch Vekic cold with her firepower, and in the Croatian’s first match on clay since the French Open.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 3
Jessica Pegula (United States) vs Viktorija Golubic (Switzerland)
Yesh
Pegula hasn’t been healthy this year, which is such a shame. When she’s on her game, no one but the elites beat her. Let’s hope she’s rested and healthy in Paris.
Prediction: Pegula in 2
Jordan
No one has given Pegula a chance of winning in Paris. The American is an all-court player and there is still time for everything to come together for her on the biggest stage. She should have a comfortable start against Golubic, who has only won two matches in her previous seven appearances at Roland-Garros.
Prediction: Pegula in 2
