The WTA event this week in Iasi has been a bit affected by the rain, but it has still featured a lot of interesting, high quality matches. While most of the world’s top players are focusing on the Olympics, that hasn’t affected the quality of this tournament much. #1 seed Mirray Andreeva was the biggest name in the draw going in and she is still alive in the tournament and arguably the clear favorite to win the title. One quarterfinal was delayed by rain, but we will edit a prediction for the second semifinal into this article as soon as it’s set. (Editor’s Note: It has been updated to add the Avanesyan vs Paquet match.)
WTA Iasi Semifinal Predictions
Elina Avanesyan vs Chloe Paquet
Head-to-head: Avanesyan 1-0
Chloe Paquet made an amazing comeback in her quarterfinal, surviving a bagel first set to win the next two easily. Avanesyan has looked like the much better player of the two this week, beating much stronger competition in relatively more impressive fashion. She seems like the solid pick to reach the final here.
Prediction: Avanesyan in 3
Mirra Andreeva vs Olga Danilovic
Head-to-head: first meeting
Mirra Andreeva is arguably the brightest young talent on the WTA Tour right now and she feels completely at home on clay, as shown by her sensational Roland Garros run a couple of months ago. She has been demolishing all her opponents this week, dropping a total of nine games in three matches, dishing out one bagel and two breadsticks in the process. She has been playing at an absolutely exceptional level and is the very clear favorite to win this tournament. Danilovic has been playing quite well too and she is a solid player on clay, but Andreeva in current form should be a level too high for her.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
