While the top players in the world will be looking ahead to next week’s Olympics in Paris, several other events will be played this week, including one of the ATP Tour’s most popular and well-liked events in Umag. The tournament features a lot of good clay court players looking to make a big run and maybe even win a rare title at ATP level. We predict all of Monday’s matches, split between this and a separate article.
ATP Umag Day 2 Predictions
Thiago Monteiro vs Tomas Machac
Head-to-head: first meeting
It should be a very close match. While Monteiro is a tour veteran who really likes playing on clay, Machac has already reached greater heights in his career and seems to have the potential to go even higher. He certainly has more weapons than the steadier Monteiro and if he is on a good day he should be able to advance to the second round here.
Prediction: Machac in 3
Marco Trungelliti vs Guido Andreozzi
Head-to-head: Andreozzi 4-0 Trungelliti
Trungelliti is the far higher ranked of the Argentines, but Andreozzi won all of their four previous meetings, even if the last one was almost a decade ago, all the way back in 2015. All things considered, it should be a very close match between two players who haven’t really had a great career at ATP level but who really enjoy playing on the red dirt. Trungelliti has a great chance to get a first ever win against his countryman and he might well take it.
Prediction: Trungelliti in 3
Mariano Navone vs Flavio Cobolli
Head-to-head: first meeting
Both players are having really nice breakthrough seasons and both love playing on clay. Navone is fresh off a heartbreaking defeat against Rafael Nadal in Bastad and will be eager to put that behind him with a great run here. Cobolli himself recently had a heartbreaking loss to Rune at Roland Garros and will also see this tournament as a chance for a big breakthrough. It should be a very close contest between two rising players, decided by small details.
Prediction: Navone in 3
