French Open Day 1 Women’s Predictions Including Donna Vekic vs Lesia Tsurenko

Donna Vekic in action ahead of the French Open.

Expect plenty of entertaining tennis on the first day at the French Open with 20 matches on the slate in Paris. As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Marie Bouzkova vs Veronika Kudermetova, Tatjana Maria vs Clara Tauson, and Lucia Bronzetti vs Naomi Osaka. But who will reach the second round at Roland Garros?

French Open Day 1 Predictions

Laura Pigossi vs Marta Kostuk

Ateet: Laura Pigossi has played most of her career in the ITF tour and this is the first time she has qualified for the French Open main draw. This is a great match up for Marta Kostyuk who has been very good this year except for her last two tournaments.

Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Jordan: Kostyuk has had a terrific season overall, although her level dipped for the first time in 2024 at her last couple of events. She is still a big favourite against Pigossi. The Brazilian is a decent clay-court player but no part of her game is better than Kostyuk’s.

Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Glenys: Pigossi has come through qualifying and set up a meeting with the 18th seed. Having failed to qualify for Madrid and the Italian Open, Pigossi will want to take advantage. Kostuk has lost early in the last couple of events so will be low on confidence.

Donna Vekic vs Lesia Tsurenko

Jordan: These two had a dramatic battle a couple of weeks ago in Rome, which Tsurenko won in a deciding set tiebreak. Vekic was considerably below her best in that match. When her game is firing, she is a slightly more formidable opponent than the Ukrainian, who is in the closing stages of her career. It would be surprising if Vekic does not raise her level at a Grand Slam.

Prediction: Vekic in 2

Glenys: Tsurenko got the better of Vekic a fortnight ago at the Foro Italico. In similar conditions, albeit on a grander stage at Roland Garros, expect the Ukrainian to have enough to get the better of Vekic once again.

Prediction: Tsurenko in 3

Olga Danilovic vs Martina Trevisan

Ateet: Martina Trevisan has been a former semifinalist of the French Open and has a good game for clay. She can tire her opponents with her defense. Olga Danilovic has progressed from qualifying and it’s never easy to face a qualifier who has already played three matches and got used to the conditions. Despite that, Trevisan’s clay court ability is a little higher than the Serb and she should advance to the next round.

Predictably: Trevisan in 3

Jordan: Danilovic’s powerful game is very dangerous on clay when it is firing. She proved that by taking Miami Open champion Danielle Collins to a deciding set tiebreak in Madrid a few weeks ago. Trevisan has had good results on the dirt in the past but fans have seen very little of that form this year. Danilovic to overwhelm the Italian.

Prediction: Danilovic in 2

Glenys: Danilovic qualified with fairly straightforward matches and will relish the challenge to move through to the second round. Trevisan hasn’t had good form coming into the French Open and could struggle. Qualifiers are known for surprises, and this could well be another one here.

Wang Xiyu vs Bai Zhuoxuan

Ateet: Two Chinese face off against each other in the first round of the Roland Garros. This is the first appearance of Bai Zhuoxuan at this venue. Wang Xiyu has not impacted this tournament or surface by any means but she should have enough to win this match.

Prediction: Wang in 2

Jordan: This is a tough one to call. Both players have similar playing styles and it seems likely this will be very tight. Wang gets a slight edge but a matchup like this could easily go to the wire.

Prediction: Wang in 3

Glenys: This all Chinese match up is going to be interesting. Neither have met on the tour before so will not be easy to read. Wang is the higher ranked, so on paper should move through. However, Bai will relish the challenge

Prediction: Bai in 3
