Since having a great run in Australia, Nuno Borges has been an incredible player. He is looking to break in the top 50 in the rankings. This kind of surface is his favorite one! Slow hard courts are perfect for his playing style. His opponent, Yoshihito Nishioka, has been struggling a lot recently. He has lost three out of his last five matches he has played. Nishioka played qualifications where he actually lost against Mmoh, but got lucky and got in the tournament as a lucky loser. Last year, here in Acapulco, Nishioka lost right away in the first round. We believe that Borges is currently a better player and that he will be able to set the pace in this match. Nishioka is struggling against the guys who are playing with a lot of intensity on both forehand and backhand. Bookies are favoring Nuno Borges, and we believe that they are right as well! Michael Mmoh is an American player who has been mostly playing at the challenger tour level in the USA. Most of his matches were played on the hard courts. We should mention that he had a little bit of luck in Acapulco. Kokkinakis retired mid-match against him and in the second round he played really well against Nishioka, where he managed to win in three sets.
He is not playing his best tennis, but his form has been pretty consistent recently. His opponent, Holger Rune, is the second seed in the draw. He is still young and really inconsistent. He had many coaching changes this year, but it does not seem like it helped him. After his match against Mmoh, earlier this month, Rune had to retire in his match against Coric. Since then, he really has been not playing his best tennis, and it seems that he has bigger fitness issues which he won’t address. All being said, we believe that Mmoh should not be such a big underdog in this match and that he could maybe even upset Rune right away in the first round. Mom to cover handicap games is a value bet!
