ATP Metz Day 2 Predictions Including Stan Wawrinka vs Bernabe Zapata Miralles

Stan Wawrinka in action ahead of the ATP Basel Open.

Some vintage names are on the schedule for day 2 of the 2023 ATP Metz Moselle Open. Lorenzo Sonego won this tournament last year, Dominic Thiem finished runner-up in 2016. Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka is making his fourth appearance at the event, dating back to 2007. Who do you think will advance?

ATP Metz Day 2 Predictions

Marcos Giron vs Lorenzo Sonego

Head-to-head: First meeting

Lorenzo Sonego is the defending champion in Metz, although the tournament was held at a different date and the points are long gone from his ranking by now. This hasn’t been a particularly strong season for him with just one semifinal, but some deep runs at big events keep him inside the top 50. Marcos Giron also did well her the last time he played here, but doesn’t quite have the explosive potential of Sonego. If the Italian can recapture some of that 2022 magic, he should find a way to win.

Prediction: Sonego in 3

Matteo Martineau vs Dominic Thiem

Head-to-head: First meeting

Matteo Martineau is making his tour-level debut. The 24-year-old had previously tried qualifying for eight tour-level events and technically didn’t make it also in his ninth one, losing to Mathias Bourgue in the final round. He’s here as a lucky loser though and recently picked up a few nice Challenger runs with his first top 100 win over World No. 88 Dominic Stricker in Mouilleron-le-Captif. This is a favorable draw for Dominic Thiem, who’s desperately looking for points to help him secure the Australian Open main draw.

Prediction: Thiem in 2

Stan Wawrinka vs Bernabe Zapata Miralles

Head-to-head: First meeting

Stan Wawrinka lost to Dominic Thiem from 5-3 40-30 up on serve in the third in Paris and recently almost stopped picking up wins (unlike in the earlier indoor swing of February). The Swiss gets a bit of a dream draw though. Bernabe Zapata Miralles hasn’t beaten a top 100 player since May and is mostly looking inadequate at the ATP Tour level off-clay. Wawrinka should get plenty of time to set up for his groundstrokes and he played well in Metz last year (semifinal appearance having started from the qualifying).

Prediction: Wawrinka in 2
