Day 6 at the WTA Finals in Cancun will decide group Chetumal, with all four players still technically alive with options to qualify for the semifinals. Iga Swiatek is almost guaranteed to qualify, but there’s still a scenario where she might fail to make the cut: if she loses in straights and Gauff wins in straights, it will be decided by game difference between Swiatek, Gauff, and Jabeur. Vondrousova is almost eliminated, but there’s still a path for her: she needs to beat Gauff in straight sets and hope Iga Swiatek beats Jabeur in straights as well. Such a scenario would see Swiatek top the group and the second spot being decided on game difference between the remaining three players.
WTA Finals Day 6 Predictions
Iga Swiatek vs Ons Jabeur
Head-to-head: Swiatek 4-2 Jabeur
Jabeur’s destiny is out of her hands as even a straight sets win would likely see her eliminated, while a straight sets loss could potentially get her qualified, but she will certainly do her best to win and she showed a much better level in matchday 2 than she had in her opening match. The problem is she will face an on-fire Iga Swiatek, who knows that a title here will see her return to #1 in the world and will be extremely motivated. It’s very hard to look past Swiatek here.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
Coco Gauff vs Marketa Vondrousova
Head-to-head: Gauff 2-0 Vondrousova
Gauff had her customary blowout defeat to Iga Swiatek in matchday 2, but she still has her destiny in her own hands. A straight sets victory here would only see her eliminated if Jabeur beat Swiatek in straights with an absolutely crazy game swing (even a double bagel might not be enough depending on Gauff’s set scores). Even a three set victory would only see her eliminated if Jabeur beats Swiatek in straights. Vondrousova, on the other hand, needs a convincing straight sets win to be in with a chance, but current form and the history of this matchup suggest that it will be Gauff prevailing and most likely making the semifinals.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
