There should be plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at the US Open and, as always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match, including Venus Williams vs Greet Minnen, Jessica Pegula vs Camila Giorgi, Ons Jabeur vs Camila Osorio, Marketa Vondrousova vs Han Na-lae, Aryna Sabalenka vs Maryna Zanevska, Karolina Pliskova vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Daria Kasatkina vs Alycia Parks. But who will reach the second round in New York?
US Open Day 2 Predictions
Caroline Garcia vs Wang Yafan
Yesh: After an amazing summer and fall last year, Caroline Garcia hasn’t quite been the same in 2023. Her attacking game can still blow past anyone, but she needs to find the consistency. Let’s see how far she makes it this event.
Prediction: Garcia in 2
Jordan: Last year’s semifinalist Garcia has been struggling a lot lately. And it may not get any easier against Wang. She has been on an absolutely phenomenal winning run to catapult herself up the rankings. Surely someone as good as Garcia cannot keep struggling forever. This could be tight though.
Prediction: Garcia in 3
Damian: Wang winning matches left and right this year was easy to bring down because of the quality of competition, but it stopped being an argument after she won Stanford and crushed the qualifying here. Beating Garcia would take this streak to an even greater level and with the Frenchwoman’s form this year, it’s an achievable goal.

Clara Burel vs Caroline Dolehide
Yesh: Clara Burel is a future contender, but she hasn’t made the leap yet. That’s not great against an American on a U.S. hard court. Don’t be surprised if Dolehide wins.
Prediction: Dolehide in 3
Jordan: Burel overall is most comfortable on clay. But she did reach the third round at Flushing Meadows last year. Dolehide is seeking a first ever win at her home Grand Slam. That is a surprise since her game is suited to hard courts. The American to break her duck in a tight match.
Prediction: Dolehide in 3
Damian: Burel has a lot of potential if she ever manages to turn her forehand into a more consistent tool. She actually produced a big upset over Rybakina on these courts last year. Her form is generally quite unstable so there’s no guarantee she beats Dolehide here, but she does have the higher ceiling.
Prediction: Burel in 2

Zheng Qinwen vs Nadia Podoroska
Yesh: Zheng Qinwen rose quickly the last few years but has stagnated a bit in recent months. Podoroska broke through at the 2020 French Open but hasn’t ever backed that up. It’s probably going to happen, but it’s hard to know when.
Prediction: Zheng in 3
Jordan: Both women have had success on clay. But it is Podoroska who is a real specialist on the dirt. Zheng to be more comfortable on a hard court to get a win.
Prediction: Zheng in 3
Damian: Waiting around for that big breakthrough event from Zheng can get a bit irritating, but the Chinese has undeniable talent and potential star quality. Let’s see if this is the one but regardless of that, she really should be taking out Podoroska on a hard court. She just needs to remain focused and keep the error count reasonable.
Prediction: Zheng in 2

Yanina Wickmayer vs Vera Zvonareva
Yesh: Talk about a throwback match. Two solid players at the tail ends of their careers. This will come down to whoever can find a level of consistency.
Prediction: Wickmayer in 3
Jordan: 38-year-old Zvonareva has mostly been playing doubles in recent times. Wickmayer though has not played a tournament for nearly a month herself. However, I expect Wickmayer to be slightly sharper to get the win. It is not an easy one to predict though.
Prediction: Wickmayer in 2
Damian: Wickmayer retired early in her final qualifying round, but managed to make it as a lucky loser. It’s hard to guess what sort of disposition she’ll be in on Tuesday. Her season has been phenomenal though and of the two veterans, she’s definitely the one that’s closer to the peak of her powers.
Prediction: Wickmayer in 2
