It’s going to be a pretty unexpected final at the 2023 WTA Bad Homburg Open. The top two seeds of the event, Iga Swiatek and Liudmila Samsonova, were both alive in the tournament on Friday, but neither will feature in Saturday’s final. Who do you think will take home the title?
Katerina Siniakova vs Lucia Bronzetti
Head-to-head: First meeting
It’s been a rough year for Katerina Siniakova in singles with injuries keeping her away from the court between Miami and the French Open. Before this week, she actually hadn’t won a match in over three months. Bad Homburg has been a very happy hunting ground for her though as she had already made the final at this event in 2019. The 27-year-old went on another run and ended up dropping just one set on the way to another championship match.
Lucia Bronzetti wasn’t an expected finalist either. With only a few matches played on grass last year, the Italian even chose to stay on clay after the French Open and featured in an ITF event in Rome two weeks ago. That didn’t go as planned and she suffered a shocking loss in the second round. Suddenly she turned it around on the grass in Bad Homburg and took advantage of Iga Swiatek’s food poisoning withdrawal to make the final.

Siniakova had to finish her quarterfinal match against Liudmila Samsonova on Friday, before comfortably taking out Emma Navarro in the semifinals. Playing twice on the same day isn’t ideal, especially when your next opponent had the day off due to a walkover. However, the Czech was so confident until the very last point on Friday, despite the packed schedule. With a great serve and the ability to employ all-court tactics, her game just suits the grass so much better than Bronzetti’s. A fabulous doubles player as well, Siniakova will use her net skills to keep up the pressure here.
Prediction: Siniakova in 2
