Fourth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia beat Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain 6-1 6-2 in a second-round match of the Miami Open on Saturday. The match lasted for a little more than an hour, as the 27-year-old Russian had little difficulty in registering a victory.
Medvedev will take on Alex Molcan of Slovakia in the third round on Monday. We will now take a look at how the match progressed:
Carballes Baena lacked power in his strokes to trouble Daniil Medvedev:
Carballes Baena was a little too insipid to pose a serious challenge to Daniil Medvedev. He often opted to play slices off either wing, including sliced returns, and lacked the firepower to hit through Medvedev.
To make matters worse for him, a few of his drop shots also failed to win him points. As a result, the Russian won five consecutive games to win the first set, breaking Carballes Baena twice in the process. Medvedev also went for depth with his groundstrokes and hardly provided any short balls to the Spaniard.

Medvedev targeted Carballes Baena’s backhand quite often:
Medvedev directed a lot of traffic towards Carballes Baena’s backhand. The Russian engaged the Spaniard in a number of crosscourt backhand exchanges and also hit his inside-out forehand quite often.
Daniil Medvedev broke Carballes Baena in the first game of the second set to get an early advantage. He got yet another break of serve in the fifth game to complete his dominance. The Russian also ventured into the net more frequently and also hit drop shots more often in the second set.
Medvedev finished the match with an overhead smash that gave Carballes Baena no chance. The Spaniard could win only 40% of the points on his second serve in the match, while Medvedev managed a staggering 85%.
