Day 2 at the first WTA 1000 of the season, in Indian Wells, California, will not feature the seeds yet, but it will surely provide plenty of excitement and some great matches with unpredictable outcomes. It will also feature a match between two former Grand Slam champions in Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin, something rare in the first round of any tournament, let alone a 1000-level event. We here at LWOT also predict the rest of the day’s action, split between three separate articles. One features Danielle Collins vs Tamara Korpatsch, the second headlines Marketa Vondrousova vs Rebecca Marino, and the third features Emma Raducanu vs Danka Kovinic.
WTA Indian Wells Day 2 Predictions
Bernarda Pera vs Lucia Bronzetti
Head-to-head: Bronzetti 1-0 Pera
Pera comes into this match as the favorite, but Bronzetti did win their one previous meeting back in 2021. However, she comes into this tournament on the back of a horrible six match losing streak; she has no form or confidence at the moment so she’s unlikely to play anything close to her best tennis. Pera hasn’t exactly been having a great season either, but she has at least won some matches, even at the Australian Open, where she reached the third round.
Prediction: Pera in 2
Yulia Putintseva vs Karolina Muchova
Head-to-head: first meeting
Muchova’s ranking definitely doesn’t reflect how well she’s been playing this year. She’s beaten Bencic and made life difficult for some other top ranked players as well. Despite being the much lower ranked player, based on the level both players have been showing recently Muchova should be able to prevail here.
Prediction: Muchova in 2
Katerina Siniakova vs Jule Niemeier
Head-to-head: first meeting
Neither player has been having a good year so far and both will be desperate to get some momentum going to try and start turning their season around. In general, however, Siniakova is the more solid and consistent player so she should have a slight edge here.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3
Sloane Stephens vs Sofia Kenin
Head-to-head: Stephens 1-0 Kenin
As hard as it may seem to believe right now, this is a matchup between two Grand Slam champions. Both players are very far from the level that took them to those heights, but Kenin is even further. Stephens should have the slight edge here in what is arguably the biggest match of the day.
Prediction: Stephens in 3
