It’s time for all the remaining first-round matchups on Day 2 of the 2023 WTA ATX Open in Austin, Texas. It will be an extremely action-filled day with a total of 11 singles matches. Who do you think will come out on top?
WTA Austin Day 2 Predictions
Harriet Dart vs Shuai Zhang
Head-to-head: First meeting
Shuai Zhang was really unlucky with her opening draws in the Middle East Swing, losing to Anett Kontaveit, Petra Kvitova, and Qinwen Zheng. This time it’s going to be a lot easier as the field in Austin doesn’t carry that many threats. Harriet Dart hasn’t been setting the world on fire herself and her upside is not as high as the Chinese, who can play really fast off the ground.
Prediction: Zhang in 3
Lauren Davis vs Anna Kalinskaya
Head-to-head: First meeting
Lauren Davis returned to the Top 50 of the WTA Rankings thanks to her title in Hobart earlier this year and has definitely been quite solid to kick off her 2023 campaign. She’s not that explosive, but with Anna Kalinskaya losing her last two matches in very tight battles (Doha and Dubai qualies), confidence will favor the American here.
Prediction: Davis in 3
Caty McNally vs Ashlyn Krueger
Head-to-head: McNally 1-0
Ashlyn Krueger is certainly a developing talent and she’s done extremely well to come through the qualifying here against two other youngsters, Erika Andreeva and Sara Bejlek. Caty McNally is looking like a main Tour player more and more often the past few months though and she is coming off a semifinal appearance in Merida. She should have a good chance to continue that form against her still rather raw compatriot.
Prediction: McNally in 2
Marta Kostyuk vs Dalma Galfi
Head-to-head: First meeting
Marta Kostyuk keeps getting so close to a breakthrough win, but can’t quite land it. In the past few weeks, she really pushed Belinda Bencic twice. If she can maintain that sort of level, she should prove superior against Dalma Galfi here. The Hungarian is a fine tennis player herself, but doesn’t carry as high of an upside.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2
