The WTA Abierto Tampico final is set and will feature Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Magda Linette. The young Italian has reaffirmed her status as a name to watch for years to come with a fine week of tennis in Tampico. In a similar vein, Magda Linette has shown how good she is when confident and in form. Both will like their chances of lifting the title come Saturday. However, there can only be one winner. With that in mind, we take a stab at trying to predict who that will be in our final prediction piece for this tournament.
WTA Abierto Tampico Final Prediction
Magda Linette vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Head-to-head: First meeting
This has been a dream week for Cocciaretto. The young Italian is responsible for the dismissal of #2 seed Maria Bouzkova, #6 seed Lin Zhu and #7 seed Camila Osorio. She now finds herself in the final playing for the biggest title of her career so far. Most of her success so at this level so far has come on the red dirt. However, a 24-12 record on hard courts at this level over the last two years shows she is no slouch on the surface and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Cocciaretto will need to continue playing at a high level to best Linette, but her power off the ground and the form and confidence this week will have given her make her a real threat for an upset.
Linette has enjoyed a quiet but solid year on the WTA Tour in 2022. That being said, some of her best tennis has come in the last couple of months. She was a finalist in Chennai and now enjoys the same opportunity to play for a title here in Tampico. Unlike her opponent, Linette has WTA titles to her name and that experience should give her real confidence here. Both her titles came on hard courts as well, showing that she is at her most dangerous on this surface. The Pole is a solid defender and counterpuncher who has the power to be dangerous from the baseline when she is feeling confident. She certainly will be at the moment so I expect her to come forward and dictate off the ground in this one.
The Prediction:
Cocciaretto has more to play for here in that she hasn’t lifted a WTA Title before. However, Linette’s experience in these moments is a crucial factor in this match. Additionally, I’m sure she’s keen to avenger her collapse in Chennai by adding a title to her name here. Cocciaretto has plenty of upside and may well surpass Linette as a player in the near future. However, the Pole is the better player now and far more comfortable on this surface. As such, I’m giving the edge to Linette in this one.
Prediction: Linette in 3
