Day 5 at the WTA event in San Diego will feature the four quarterfinal matches, including a rematch of the Roland Garros final between Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff in what will surely be the biggest match of the day. It’s an usually stacked draw for an event of this category and we’ll have no less than five top 10 players in action this Friday in California.
WTA San Diego Day 5 Predictions
Donna Vekic vs Aryna Sabalenka
Head-to-head: Vekic 4-1 Sabalenka
The head-to-head might be highly favorable to Vekic, but as of now Sabalenka is at their peak of her career and clearly the superior player of the two, with legitimate Grand Slam title aspirations. The World #5 has been having an excellent season, with only her inability to beat Iga Swiatek (although she was close at the US Open) preventing her from being even more successful, and she should be able to prevail with relative ease here.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2
Jessica Pegula vs Madison Keys
Head-to-head: first meeting
Pegula was arguably very unlucky during the North American summer, as she lost before the final to the eventual champion in all three big events: Simona Halep in Canada, Caroline Garcia in Cincinnati and Iga Swiatek in New York. She’s indeed been playing quite well and showing some good consistency though, so she should be able to get past a tricky opponent in Madison Keys here.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
Paula Badosa vs Danielle Collins
Head-to-head: first meeting
After a spectacular and unexpected run to the finals at the Australian Open, Collins hasn’t really been able to kick on since. Badosa hasn’t been having a very impressive season either, despite her ranking. In fact she came into San Diego on the back of three consecutive losses and six in the last seven matches. It’s a very unpredictable matchup, one that could genuinely go either way.
Prediction: Badosa in 3
Iga Swiatek vs Coco Gauff
Head-to-head: Swiatek 3-0 Gauff
Gauff is having an excellent season but she got routined both times she played Swiatek, and for good reason: the Pole is the class of the tour and has been playing at an exceptional nigh on unbeatable level for most of the season, at least outisde grass. Gauff might put up a better fight than in the last two matches between the pair, but the final outcome isn’t expected to be any different here.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2
