WTA Slovenia Open Day 2 Predictions
Donna Vekic vs Diane Parry
Head-to-head: First meeting
This has to be one of the most interesting matches of the round–Donna Vekic slowly returning back to form after an injury against a huge up-and-coming talent in Diane Parry. It remains to be seen if the Frenchwoman’s one-handed backhand holds up and it will surely be a target for Vekic. If the experienced Croat can direct her power into that wing, she’ll be the favorite to take this one.
Prediction: Vekic in 3
Tamara Zidansek vs Anastasia Zakharova
Head-to-head: First meeting
Tamara Zidansek is coming into this event on a five-match losing streak. She made the quarterfinals last year and will probably be really motivated to play well in her country. Anastasia Zakharova qualified when Ana Konjuh was forced to retire at 3-5 down and while she’s not going to be an easy out, this is a perfect opportunity for Zidansek to get some form going with the help from the crowd.
Prediction: Zidansek in 2
Jasmine Paolini vs Tara Wurth
Head-to-head: First meeting
Tara Wurth has only played six hard-court matches in her career, but she’s looked competitive enough at an ITF in Bronx and during US Open qualifying. Even though she’s more of a clay specialist herself, Jasmine Paolini takes the ball quite early and knows her way around this surface too. The experience plus her ability to speed things up off the ground should carry her through here.
Prediction: Paolini in 3
Elena Rybakina vs Laura Siegemund
Head-to-head: Rybakina 3-1
Even though Elena Rybakina hasn’t been setting the world on fire since Wimbledon, she’s still playing at a decent level. This is a pretty nice matchup for her as the Kazakh loves to overwhelm her opponents with the flat hitting and huge power. Laura Siegemund is at her most dangerous when she has the time to use her variety and construct the rallies (also, she’s rarely that good off clay).
Prediction: Rybakina in 2
