The Argentine and the Brit were battling it out in the first set with former winner Murray leading 5-4. With Cerundolo serving to stay in the set the Brit secured the first point. An enthralling rally on the next point ended when the 24-year-old smashed a winner, which should have been 15-all.

Murray approached the umpire Timo Jansen and good-naturedly stated that he thought he had seen a double bounce earlier in the rally, when the Argentine had chased down an angled drop shot from the Brit. Replays on the big screens around the court showed that Murray was correct. The ball had bounced twice.

Jansen had originally missed the double bounce, thinking that Cerundolo got to the ball in time. With boos ringing round the court when the replay showed it did actually bounce twice, the umpire had the opportunity to correct the call and replay the point.

However, the umpire still thought at first that the Argentine got there in time, saying, “No, he got that up.” The Argentine took matters into his own hands. Cerundolo agreed with the Brit and said, “No, it was a double bounce,” and told the umpire to give the point to Murray.

That put the Argentine at 0-30 in a vital game. However, it didn’t stop Cerundolo from holding serve. It was only a short period though, as Murray went on to break the 24-year-old the next game and take the set 7-5. The Brit then secured the overall victory in straight sets to set up a second-round match with American Emilio Nava.
