Day two at the WTA Nottingham Open sees some of the higher seeds have their first matches on grass of the year. It is always a tricky surface to adapt to but many of these players have good records and decent experience on the surface so it will be interesting to see how they begin. Who will successfully get that first hurdle out of the way?

WTA Nottingham Day 2 Predictions

Rebecca Marino vs Eden Silva

Head-to-head: first meeting

Fun fact. This will be Rebecca Marino’s first grass court match on tour since 2011. Her second-round defeat to Roberta Vinci at Wimbledon eleven years ago was the last time the Canadian ventured onto the green stuff in the professional ranks. Marino had quite some time out of the game in the intervening years, but qualified for the main draw here off the back of some excellent form that pushes her towards the top 100. Eden Silva is much lower ranked, but has much more recent experience on the grass and qualified on these courts to get here so she should be acclimatised to the conditions. Marino is undoubtedly the better player though and I’m backing her to get through, though it wouldn’t surprise me to see her make a slow start.

Prediction: Marino in 3

Katie Boulter vs Tatjana Maria

Head-to-head: Boulter 1-0 Maria

Playing at home always seems to stir Katie Boulter into action. The former top 100 player is often beset by injury problems, but when she is fit is capable of taking it to some very good players. Boulter has a winning record on grass and at home in the UK, but Maria has a better grass-court record overall. Tatjana Maria also has some good form coming in and played three matches at Surbiton last week so has been on the grass already. It should be a close game but I think if Boulter gets her game working then she could work Maria off the court enough to get over the line.

Alison Riske vs Daria Snigur

Head-to-head: first meeting

Grass is Alison Riske’s best surface going by win % and every time I watch her play on the surface she just looks comfortable. She’s played Nottingham four times previously and never lost in the first round. Riske is also a former finalist here and will be hoping to kick start the short grass season with a deep run. Daria Snigur qualified but against players who are way out of her class, and definitely way behind Riske’s ability and ranking. Snigur has won one WTA main tour match in her career and I doubt she will add to that here.

Prediction: Riske in 2

Viktorija Golubic vs Emma Raducanu

Head-to-head: first meeting

It was this time last year that Emma Raducanu was embarking on a WTA Tour career seriously for the first time. She lost in the opening round her to Harriet Dart but went on to play an excellent tournament at Wimbledon to make herself known to the British public. However, we cannot forget that Viktorija Golubic was excellent on grass last year as well. Indeed, she reached the Wimbledon quarterfinal and so this is a very tough draw indeed for Raducanu. The Golubic of today though isn’t quite the same as the Golubic of 2021. The Swiss has endured a tough run in 2022, although both women carry more losses than wins this year. However, I do think that Raducanu is in slightly better touch than Golubic and the home crowd may well just help her over the line here.

Prediction: Raducanu in 3
