Sloane Stephens has been extremely disappointing ever since she won her seventh WTA singles title in Guadalajara in February. Stephens managed just one win from her last six tournaments, most recently hitting a new low in Strasbourg where she lost to Nefisa Berberovic, a player ranked outside the top 400 at the time. Despite all this, I still have some hope for Stephens, perhaps stupidly. I see value with Stephens as an underdog against Jule Niemeier. Stephens has a brilliant record at Roland Garros, it is her most consistent major and I expect to her raise her level and intensity for this matchup, in that case she has a good chance at victory.

Garbine Muguruza vs Kaia Kanepi
Garbine Muguruza is not having a great season, but surely she will be focused enough to get through her opening round clash with Kaia Kanepi. I see this as a good matchup for Muguruza given her recent form, Kanepi isn’t the type of player to get into extended rallies where a rusty Muguruza would be vulnerable. Instead, Muguruza likes these types of matchups with powerful, first-strike opponents, just look at her past success against peak Serena Williams on this very surface. I think the odds are overreacting to Muguruza’s recent form, she should sharpen up for a major, one where she is a previous champion no less.

Leylah Fernandez vs. Kristina Mladenovic
Kristina Mladenovic is a shadow of her former self, and I wouldn’t usually recommend betting on her. However, her massive odds against a somewhat vulnerable and overrated Leylah Fernandez are quite appealing on this occasion. Fernandez is yet to prove herself on the red clay and will be feeling the pressure in this matchup on the big stage as a heavy favourite. Mladenovic is a former quarterfinalist in Paris, it’s safe to assume Roland Garros is her favourite tournament as she will be spurred on by the crowd. Mladenovic is more dangerous in scenarios where she has nothing to lose and has thrived off the Parisian crowd in the past. Worth a shot at these odds.
