The WTA event in Strasbourg this week has a relatively weak field, with lots of players outside the top 100 and even top 300, but it also features some big names who are not quite at their best, like former Grand Slam champions Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens, who’ll both start their campaigns on Monday and will be looking to get back on track this weekSloane Stephens Showing Flashes of Her Old Self at Roland Garros.
WTA Strasbourg Predictions
Sloane Stephens vs Nefisa Berberovic
Head-to-head: first meeting
Stephens is a former Grand Slam champion (US Open 2017) and world #3, but she’s far from that level these days. In fact, she comes into this tournament on the back of four consecutive losses and on the verge of leaving the top 50. Luckily for Stephens, her opening match in Strasbourg will be against an opponent ranked #309 in the world, who shouldn’t be able to offer much resistance against the American.
Prediction: Stephens in 2
Diane Parry vs Angelique Kerber
Head-to-head: first meeting
Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion and former #1 in the world, but at 34 years of age she’s no longer the force she once was. In fact, she has only won two matches far in 2022, both at Indian Wells. Albeit on her worst surface, this tournament might be a good chance to get some momentum going, with a first round encounter against an opponent in the fringes of the top 100 and who hasn’t really been winning matches this year either.
Prediction: Kerber in 2
Heather Watson vs Katharina Hobgarski
Head-to-head: first meeting
Watson was a junior Grand Slam champion at the US Open, but her senior career hasn’t been quite as successful. Currently outside the top 100, she has an opportunity here to get a win and maybe a run going as she’ll face an opponent ranked outside the top 300 who’s clearly out of her depth at this level.
Prediction: Watson in 2
