The remainder of the WTA second round matchups will be completed on Sunday at the Mutua Madrid Open. Some of the biggest names in the draw will be in action, including Naomi Osaka, Garbine Muguruza, Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez. All of those names are featured in my best bets of the day, some of them look to be in danger against tricky opponents, let’s take a closer look at their matchups.
WTA Mutua Madrid Open – Day 4 Best Bets
Naomi Osaka vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo
Sara Sorribes Tormo on clay is a troublesome matchup for Naomi Osaka. Of course, Osaka could blow Sorribes Tormo off the court with a clinical performance, but if she’s even slightly off, she will have a hard time in this matchup. Sorribes Tormo defeated Osaka 6-0 6-3 in Billie Jean King Cup tie in early 2020 in what is their only previous match on a clay court. Sorribes Tormo even managed to take a set off Osaka on the hard courts of Miami in 2019. I’m not totally convinced by Osaka at the moment, she still seems vulnerable in tricky situations. An annoying opponent on her worst surface may trigger her downfall.
Recommended Selections:
Sara Sorribes Tormo ML – 1 unit @ +212
(7) Garbine Muguruza vs. Anhelina Kalinina
Garbine Muguruza hasn’t had a good start to the season, it’s been very poor by her lofty standards, especially considering she ended 2021 on a high at the WTA Finals. This means she is much less of a favourite than she would usually be in a matchup like this against Anhelina Kalinina. Muguruza is easily a class above and should be motivated to get her season on track this week at her home tournament. I see some value with Muguruza at these odds, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she will show her class in this matchup.
Recommended Selections:
Garbine Muguruza ML – 1.5 units @ -153
(9) Emma Raducanu vs. Marta Kostyuk
Emma Raducanu escaped an early test against Tereza Martincova in the opening round but is unlikely to be afforded the same luxuries in a second round matchup with Marta Kostyuk. Martincova had set point as she served for the first set at 5-3, she didn’t capitalize and capitulated thereafter. Meanwhile, Kostyuk produced a clinical performance to defeat the talented Clara Tauson 6-3 6-2. I think Kostyuk has a point to prove in this matchup, she is underrated against the more hyped Raducanu. But in reality, I’d say Kostyuk is the slight favourite in this matchup on a clay court. Raducanu is very beatable.
Recommended Selections:
Marta Kostyuk ML – 1.5 units @ -106
(17) Leylah Fernandez vs. Jil Teichmann
Leylah Fernandez was unconvincing in a three set win over Andrea Petkovic in the opening round. Conversely, Teichmann handled the great threat of Petra Kvitova with ease in a straight set win. Another matchup where the bigger named player seems a little overrated. Teichmann has a far greater record on clay and is likely to be a problematic matchup for Fernandez in these conditions. Fernandez isn’t at her best right now, a tough situation to be in against a versatile opponent like Teichmann on a clay court. I’d have Teichmann as the slight favourite in this matchup.
Recommended Selections:
Jil Teichmann ML – 1.5 units @ -102
