ATP Monte Carlo Day 5 Predictions Including Jannik Sinner vs Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev in action at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters.

There should be plenty of entertaining action on day five at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters, with eight intriguing third-round matches on the slate in the Principality. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for all eight matches, including Taylor Fritz vs Sebastian Korda. But who will book their place in the last eight?

ATP Monte Carlo Day 5 Predictions

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs David Goffin

Head-to-head: Goffin 1-0 Davidovich Fokina

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina scored the biggest win of his career by defeating the world #1 Novak Djokovic. Can he back up the win and beat David Goffin? The Belgian is in fine form himself after winning the title in Marrakech and he has maintained that level so far in Monte Carlo, where he has a good record, beating Jiri Lehecka and Dan Evans to reach this stage. He also got the better of Davidovich Fokina in their only previous meeting, losing just two games in a comprehensive 6-0 6-2 win. That was three years ago, and on grass, so this should be more competitive. But expect Goffin to win it in two again.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Albert Ramos Vinolas

Head-to-head: first meeting

Hubert Hurkacz is not exactly known as a clay courter, so it is perhaps a surprise that he has made it this far after beating Hugo Dellien and Pedro Martinez, both clay-court specialists. Albert Ramos Vinolas, however, has more experience than Dellien and Martinez put together, having reached the French Open quarterfinals in 2016 and the final at this very event a year later. He is also in fine form after beating world #10 Cameron Norrie in the second round. He will be looking to maintain that level. Expect a close match, but for the Spaniard to have the edge.

Diego Schwartzman vs Lorenzo Musetti

Head-to-head: first meeting

It will be a tough match for both players. Diego Schwartzman and Lorenzo Musetti are both most at home on the clay and both have looked sharp so far this week. Lorenzo Musetti opened his campaign with a three-set win over Benoit Paire and he backed that up by upsetting Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round. Schwartzman, meanwhile, rallied from a set down to beat Karen Khachanov in the first round before dismissing Marton Fucsovics 6-0 7-6. Expect a good match here, but for Schwartzman’s greater experience and consistency to prove decisive.

Jannik Sinner vs Andrey Rublev

Head-to-head: Sinner 1-1 Rublev

Jannik Sinner has looked solid so far at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters, having beaten Borna Coric in three sets in his opener and fellow young gun Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. Andrey Rublev, after a first-round bye, started his clay-court swing with a 2-6 6-1 6-4 win over Alex de Minaur. Their head-to-head is tied 1-1, but their last meeting came in similar conditions on the clay courts in Barcelona last season and Sinner won that match in straight sets. Expect a similar result this time around.

Prediction: Sinner in 2
