It’s time to complete the second round of the 2022 ATP BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California. Among these starting their campaigns will be top-tenners Felix Auger-Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz (one spot out at the moment). One of them faces a considerably tougher challenge, but neither will be quite happy with their draws. Who do you think will advance to the next stage of the tournament?
ATP Indian Wells Day 4 Predictions
Marin Cilic vs Miomir Kecmanovic
Head-to-head: First meeting
It might not be that noticeable in his results yet, but Miomir Kecmanovic’s might be on the verge of making some real progress this year. Currently 12-5 for the year, the Serbian won at least a match in every event he played so far and reached the fourth round at the Australian Open. His match against Liam Broady here was easy to overlook, but had some truly stunning level towards the end of the deciding set. Marin Cilic’s performances have been a mixed bag as usual, but the Croat also seems less fragile and vulnerable than in recent memory. The two are flying under the radar but might produce one of the matches of the round. If both play up to their recent standard, this will come down to the brink. Perhaps Cilic’s more obvious weapons and ways to win the points give him a slight edge.
Prediction: Cilic in 3
Alex de Minaur vs John Millman
Head-to-head: de Minaur 3-0
In three meetings thus far, Alex de Minaur is yet to drop more than five games against John Millman. His dominance can perhaps be explained by the power of youth and excellent court coverage – the 23-year-old might not possess a significant kill shot, but neither does his compatriot which leads to a number of long rallies, where de Minaur’s fantastic foot speed shines through. Is it likely to be as decisive again? Probably not, but the younger of the Aussies has picked up some form this year after a dreadful finish to his 2021 campaign and should be able to secure another win against the lucky loser.
Prediction: de Minaur in 2
Oscar Otte vs Hubert Hurkacz
Head-to-head: First meeting
Oscar Otte had a phenomenal run in the latter half of 2021 and is now reaping the benefits, having broken the top 100 at a relatively late stage of his career. The early days of his ATP Tour life have shown he can be extremely competitive at this level too. The German improved his baseline game and holds up much better in rallies now, but should still be at a disadvantage whenever the point goes longer against Hubert Hurkacz. With the Pole also in possession of a very dangerous serve, he seems to have all the keys to the match in his pocket.
Prediction: Hurkacz in 2
Botic van de Zandschulp vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Head-to-head: Auger-Aliassime 1-0
This is certainly not an ideal matchup to kick off your campaign at a big event. Botic van de Zandschulp is capable of hanging with practically anyone when he’s on, making him a very unpleasant opponent for a high seed. However, with how well Felix Auger-Aliassime has played this year, it’s getting really hard not to back him. The Canadian is significantly more clutch now, got over the mental block of performing in tour-level finals, and makes deep runs in tournaments on a very regular basis. He’s better at handling these tough challenges now.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 3
