17 year old Robin Montgomery looks to upset Kaia Kanepi in the opening round of WTA Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open, while Dayana Yastremska takes on Carolina Garcia, in a matchup of players in good form.
Robin Montgomery vs Kaia Kanepi
The 17-year-old Montgomery made her Tour level debut last year at the US Open. A top American junior, she will face a player twice her age, in Kanepi, the accomplished veteran has been playing well the last twelve months and should still be able to outmaneuver Montgomery, who is still finding her footing at this level. Rebecca Peterson vs Harmony Tan
The qualifier Tan, will take on Rebecca Peterson, Peterson has not been overly impressive this season, and Tan has has built on her ITF Tour success last year to get a foothold on the WTA Tour. Tan should be able to get the opening win here in a slight upset. Tan in 3
Claire Liu vs Viktoriya Tomova
Liu is at a career high ranking, a long time ITF level player, she’s trying to make the big move up to the WTA Tour. Tomova rolled through qualifying and has been a success in qualifying tournaments this season. This is a competitive match but Tomova should have the upper hand. Tomova in 2
Dayana Yastremska vs Caroline Garcia
Yastremska had an inspiring run in Lyon reaching the final after fleeing Odessa, Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion of her home. The former top 25 player had an inspired week and has been solid this season. Garcia was a quarterfinalist in Sydney and a semifinalist in Lyon, on paper she’s favored, but Yastremska has a lot of upside and plenty to play for given the emotions of the moment and carrying the weight of a nation on her shoulders.
