Who will emerge victorious?

WTA Monterrey Final Prediction

Leylah Fernandez vs Camila Osorio

Head-to-head: first meeting

Fernandez has looked increasingly comfortable on court over her last couple of matches in Monterrey. The Canadian only just edged out Zheng Qinwen 6-1 4-6 7-6 in the second round but has recovered well with a pair of straight set wins over Qiang Wang 7-6 6-4 and Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1 6-4. Fernandez is on a nine-match winning streak in Monterrey, one more victory and she joins a rare group of players to successfully defend her first tile.

Osorio started her week with comfortable victories over Magdalene Frech and Mexican wild card Marcela Zacarias. She then played a superb match in the quarterfinals, where she defeated the top seeded Elina Svitolina 1-6 7-5 7-6 despite trailing by a double break in the deciding set. The Colombian secured her spot in the final with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. Osorio’s consistency, versatility and fighting spirit make her a problematic matchup for anyone at the moment.

This promises to be entertaining clash, there doesn’t seem to be much to separate the pair. Fernandez is the favourite based on her superior results at the highest level, most notably her run to the US Open final last year, but Osorio is on mission and will be hard to stop. Osorio’s relentless pressure may just crack Fernandez in what should be a tight contest.

Prediction: Osorio in 3
