Day 2 at the ATP tournament in Buenos Aires will be inevitably dominated by Juan Martin del Potro’s return and likely farewell to the circuit, but there’s some other interesting matches on offer, including the debut of last week’s Cordoba champion Albert Ramos. We predict the rest of the matches, including del Potro’s, in a separate article.
ATP Buenos Aires Predictions
Sebastian Baez vs Holger Rune
Head-to-head: Baez 1-1 Rune
Both are young up and coming talents on the ATP tour, but Rune in particular has been struggling a bit this year: he’s yet to win a main draw match. Baez, on the other hand, is three years older than his opponents and has shown some promising signs this year. Rune still seems to have the clearly higher potential and it’s only a matter of time until he starts stringing wins, especially on this surface.
Prediction: Rune in 3
Alejandro Tabilo vs Pedro Martinez
Head-to-head: first meeting
Tabilo had by far the best week of his career in Cordoba. He’ll be disappointed he lost the final after winning the first set, but the reality is he won as many ATP main draw matches in Cordoba as he had in his entire career previously. This likely made him spend far too much physical and mental energy to be able to have another strong week in Argentina and Martinez should be able to pull through here.
Prediction: Martinez in 3
Albert Ramos vs Thiago Monteiro
Head-to-head: Ramos 4-1 Monteiro
Ramos has just had one of the best weeks in his career, securing a fourth career ATP title in Cordoba. All 4 of those titles have been obtained on clay, in fact all 11 of his finals were on this surface. It’s unusual for Ramos-level players to back up title runs in the following week, but the Spaniard will surely be aiming to continue his fine form on Argentinian soil. Monteiro, on the other hand, will be looking to take advantage of Ramos’s potential fatigue to start a run of his own here and he might well be able to pull it off.
Prediction: Monteiro in 3
