2021 was far from kind to Dominic Thiem. The former World #3 suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Mallorca before Wimbledon, and has not played a match since. Thiem was set to return to action this week at the Cordoba Open, but has withdrawn due to yet another injury. Despite the disappointment, the Austrian remains positive and doesn’t view this as a long-term problem.
Dominic Thiem Suffers Further Setback
Hopes were high for Thiem’s long-awaited comeback when he announced his participation in the Cordoba Open. However, concerns were raised when his practice ended due to an issue that wasn’t disclosed. His team assured that it wasn’t a wrist problem, and it seemed as though his return would still go ahead.
Unfortunately, Thiem announced on Monday that he would be unable to participate this week due to an injury between his knuckles on the right hand. His wrist is apparently in fine condition, but this is another big blow for Thiem’s confidence. His efforts to get back to the top of the sport are not being rewarded with much luck.

It’s undeniable that Dominic Thiem has been one of the best players in the world in recent years. Winning the 2020 US Open and reaching three other Major finals seemed just the beginning. However, the rising form of Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev during Thiem’s absence appears to have dulled down the hype around him somewhat.
Though we won’t witness his comeback just yet, Thiem remains fairly optimistic about returning soon. With his wrist supposedly being 100% right now, this is hopefully a minor setback that won’t prolong his comeback for too long.
More from Dominic Thiem: Wrist is at 100 % again, new injury could take "a couple of days" to "two weeks" to heal. Therefore, no decision on Buenos Aires yet. Says that Indian Wells could be the place where is fully competitive again.
