ATP Toronto Masters 1000 Day 2 Predictions
Jenson Brooksby vs Nikoloz Basilashvili
Head-to-head: Basilashvili 1-0 Brooksby
Their previous meeting was a very tight win for Basilashvili at the 2019 US Open. Since then, Brooksby has really grown and come into his own as a player, while the Georgian has gone the opposite way, to the point where the young American is a very strong favorite here and should prevail, especially with the confidence of recent excellent runs.
Prediction: Brooksby in 2
Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Bublik
Head-to-head: Medvedev 4-0 Bublik
They’ve played four times and all four have been easy straight set wins for Medvedev–two of them this year, one of them very recently at the Olympics in Tokyo. There’s no doubt that Bublik is an extremely talented and mercurial player but under normal circumstances the world #2 is simply too steady and consistent in this matchup. With Djokovic out of the picture, Medvedev is arguably the favorite to win this event, after reaching the final in its previous edition in 2019.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Casper Rudd vs Marin Cilic
Head-to-head: Rudd 1-o Cilic
Rudd is having an unbelievable season, sporting a 35-9 record with four titles, as many as Novak Djokovic. All that success, however, has come on clay. Tthe Norwegian is nowhere near as strong on a hardcourt. Cilic might be a very declined force, but he’s a former Grand Slam champion who even now has the tools to overpower Rudd on a hardcourt.
Prediction: Cilic in 3
Miomir Kecmanovic vs Kei Nishikori
Head-to-head: Kecmanovic 1-0 Nishikori
The Japanese superstar has shown some signs of slowly returning to his best. After a good Olympic run, he came tantalizingly close to a final in D.C. last week, but lost a close three-setter to a very inspired Mackenzie McDonald. He will be looking to put together another good run here in Canada against the same opponent who beat him on his return to the tour last year. Kecmanovic has had an extremely disappointing season so far, and he’ll be doing his best to start turning things around, but the Japanese is a clear favorite here.
Prediction: Nishikori in 2
